Designed by renowned golf-course architect Robert Trent Jones, Port Royal Golf Course is a sight to behold.
One of the few left of its kind, this course opened in 1970 is still owned and operated by the Bermuda Government.
However, do not take this to mean that Port Royal is boring and stale by any accounts. In fact, this par-71 course
challenges even the finest players from the first to the 18th hole and is consistently ranked one of the best public
courses on the island.
The course starts out with a par 4 hole with a dog leg right of 432 yards. From this hole you will play slowly upward
until you reach the elegant clubhouse with its bar and lounge at the top of the hill. Before you can retire to the
tranquility of the clubhouse though you must get through the most famous hole in Bermuda golf; 16. The tee and green for
this hole are perched precariously on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Don’t let this hole’s par 3 status
lull you into a false sense of comfort though as many balls have been lost trying to hit the green on this majestic hole.
So famous is this hole in fact, that it is a favorite of Jack Nicklaus.
If it is championship golf you are looking for, Port Royal has it. Although only a public course, it plays host to the
Bermuda Open Championship every year. It is also one of the most popular and heavily-played Bermuda Golf Course.
Even though Port Royal Golf Course is not as difficult as some of the other courses on the island, you may
want to hone your game a bit before stepping on the course. This is not a problem. Resident golf professional Francis
Rabain offers private and group lessons daily. If it is your swing you are looking to perfect you can just as easily hit a
couple of buckets at the driving range, located conveniently near the course.
After your game sit down to a hearty meal at Greg’s Steakhouse located in the clubhouse. If it is simple relaxation you are
looking for, the clubhouse has a fully stocked bar in a quaint setting that is perfect for rehashing the 18 holes you just
completed with your group.
